In cooperation with the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, the Modern Art Gallery of the Saarland Museum is presenting a major exhibition on the avant-garde duo Marthe Donas and Alexander Archipenko. The exhibition, featuring around 120 works, highlights the fruitful collaboration between the artist couple between 1917 and 1920. Donas' radical shaped canvases and Archipenko's pioneering sculpto-peintures mark central highlights of early modernism. The exhibition focuses on the rediscovery of Marthe Donas, whose innovative work, despite its spectacular success at times, was largely forgotten in the following decades, while Alexander Archipenko's fame continues unabated to this day. The presentation allows visitors to view the artistic development of both positions in dialogue and to compare their respective formal and conceptual approaches with those of other avant-garde artists.

Aus dem Raum an Rhein, Maas und Mosel stammt eine bemerkenswerte Anzahl an frühchristlichen Quellen. Die Schrift- und archäologischen Zeugnisse aus der spätrömischen und merowingischen Zeit dieses Gebiets ermöglichen Aussagen über den unterschiedlichen Ablauf und die Intensität der jeweiligen Christianisierung in Spätantike und Merowingerzeit bis hin zu den Entwicklungen der Karolingerzeit.

Gerade in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten haben zahlreiche Aufarbeitungen archäologischer Befunde vor allem in den Zentren Xanten, Köln, Bonn, Mainz, Trier und Tongeren gezeigt, dass die Interpretation und chronologische Einordnung von frühchristlichen Architekturzeugnissen in großen Teilen abgeändert werden muss. Verschiedene Neufunde von Gegenständen mit christlichen Szenen, Inschriften oder Symbolen und zum Teil bisher unbekannte Denkmäler aus den Depots der rheinischen Museen ergänzen das Bild zur Christianisierung der Region.

Prof. Dr. Sebastian Ristow zeigt in seinem Vortrag die aktuelle Sicht auf die Fragestellungen zum Christentum des 4.–9. Jahrhunderts anhand ausgewählter Beispiele auf.

L’exposition, qui réunit environ 120 œuvres, met en lumière la collaboration fructueuse du couple d’artistes entre 1917 et 1920. Les toiles aux formes radicales de Donas et les sculptures peintures pionnières d’Archipenko constituent des moments forts du modernisme précoce. L’exposition se concentre sur la redécouverte de Marthe Donas, dont l’œuvre innovante, malgré un succès spectaculaire à certaines époques, a été largement oubliée au fil des décennies, tandis que la renommée d’Alexander Archipenko demeure intacte à ce jour.
