In cooperation with the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, the Modern Art Gallery of the Saarland Museum is presenting a major exhibition on the avant-garde duo Marthe Donas and Alexander Archipenko. The exhibition, featuring around 120 works, highlights the fruitful collaboration between the artist couple between 1917 and 1920. Donas' radical shaped canvases and Archipenko's pioneering sculpto-peintures mark central highlights of early modernism. The exhibition focuses on the rediscovery of Marthe Donas, whose innovative work, despite its spectacular success at times, was largely forgotten in the following decades, while Alexander Archipenko's fame continues unabated to this day. The presentation allows visitors to view the artistic development of both positions in dialogue and to compare their respective formal and conceptual approaches with those of other avant-garde artists.
